asked the Minister for Local Government the progress made in planning the proposed new motorway between Galway and Dublin.

An aerial survey is in progress with a view to establishing the line of a possible motorway route from Dublin to Kilcock. Contoured maps on which detailed design could proceed will be available in 1973. Preliminary route investigation has been carried out on the section Kilcock-Enfield-Kinnegad. Legislation giving road authorities general powers to construct motorways is being prepared for introduction to the House.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the urgent need for an adequate road network and an efficient transport system in the Dublin region, the Government have plans for the expenditure of specific sums of money for these purposes over a period of years.

The Dublin Corporation and the Dublin County Council, including the Borough of Dún Laoghaire, have prepared a five year programme for road improvements and these programmes are being examined. The amount of assistance from the Road Fund towards the programme over the five years will be determined on the basis of the projects in the programme which are undertaken. I might add, however, that in the current financial year the total sum allocated to the Dublin Corporation, the Dublin County Council and the Dún Laoghaire Borough Corporation was £3,063,910 as against £2,396,750 for 1971-72.
