Vol. 264 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Attendance Act.

21.

asked the Minister for Education if he intends to amend the School Attendance Act, 1926.

I am not satisfied that any amendment of the School Attendance Act, 1926, is necessary.

Would the Minister not agree that because of the abuse of child-employees in agricultural work at certain times of the year, it should be looked into?

I did not hear the Deputy properly.

In certain areas of the country schools close for a period to allow children to pick potatoes. If children must do this work for economic reasons, the Act that permits this should be considered so as to make sure that conditions are favourable for these children.

There is provision in the existing Act to deal with that.

May I ask the Minister——

Time is limited and other Deputies would like answers to their questions also.

I wish only to ask one further supplementary.

The Deputy has already asked a supplementary. I have called Question No. 22.
