Vol. 264 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glasshouse Industry.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the present position in regard to the development council for the glasshouse industry proposed in the Third Programme for Economic and Social Development.

The setting up of such a council as a State or semi-State agency would not be compatible with EEC policy. The functions of such a body would come within the field of producer group activity. Grant aid towards the formation of horticultural producer groups and towards the provision on behalf of such groups of market information, is available under the horticultural grants scheme.

With what regulation would the setting-up of such a development council be concerned?

I imagine that the information the Deputy is requesting would be available in the Department of Agriculture's Policy on the EEC which has been circulated to every Deputy.

It does not deal with the development council.
