Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 14 Dec 1972

Vol. 264 No. 8

Nomination of Member of Government.

Tairgim:

Go gcomhaontóidh Dáil Éireann leis an Taoiseach d'ainmniú an Teachta Mícheál Ó Cinéide chun a cheaptha ag an Uachtarán chun bheith ina chomhalta den Rialtais.

I move:

That Dáil Éireann approve the nomination by the Taoiseach of Deputy Michael O'Kennedy for appointment by the President to be a member of the Government.

I take it that this nomination is consequential on the decision by the people to join the European Economic Community and the decision to appoint the present Minister for Foreign Affairs to be a Commissioner to the Community?

That is the position. The appointment becomes effective immediately but the assignment of Deputy O'Kennedy to a particular office will not be made until such time as Deputy Hillery's resignation as Minister for Foreign Affairs becomes effective.

Would the Taoiseach say whether there will be mention in the House of the changes in the Cabinet consequential on this appointment?

The changes, if any, do not arise yet.

Does the Taoiseach envisage making these changes while the House is in recess?

That is the position now. All the House is concerned with is the appointment of a member of the Government.

Question put and agreed to.
