Vol. 264 No. 8

Written Answers. - Use of Deep Plough.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if any Land Project survey has been carried out on the potential of the deep plough, pioneered in Ballyferriter, County Kerry, for improving bad land in each county; and, if so, if he will indicate the results of the survey and the extent to which farmers applying for Land Project grants are encouraged to use the deep plough on suitable lands.

While a formal survey of the type referred to by the Deputy has not been carried out, the information at the disposal of the Land Project indicates that the areas of land suitable for improvement by this method are quite limited, being mainly confined to the western seaboard counties. Where necessary land improvement can be effected by deepploughing, farmers are offered Land Project grant-aid for such reclamation work.
