Vol. 265 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

44.

asked the Minister for Health if he will arrange for an immediate national review of the conditions governing eligibility for the medical card so as to ensure that more uniform and equitable guidelines can be established.

While there are variations in the standards as between one health board area and another, a substantial degree of uniformity in the guidelines governing eligibility exists throughout the country. I propose to consider the matter further in the near future.

In the Minister's own county 50 per cent of the people have medical cards but the wrong 50 per cent as the Minister said a couple of months ago, because of the guidelines operative in the South Eastern Health Board area. It should be a matter of priority that these guidelines be reviewed.

I have said that.
