Vol. 265 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Thalidomide Children.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if he has taken any action to support the case of children affected by thalidomide in Ireland.

As I indicated in my reply to Questions Nos. 10, 11, 12 and 13 of 28th March, 1973, it has been necessary for me first of all to study the position generally in regard to these children. In this connection I recently met representatives of the parents of the children and, as I informed them, I am now reporting to the Government on the matter. I have been asked to meet them again and will do so shortly. I shall be reconsidering the matter in the light of any further representations they may make.

Would the Minister ask the Government to grant a supplementary to the parents towards the very heavy expenses they have in foreign travelling and negotiations in this matter?

That has been put to me and that will be one of the considerations.

I am sorry I did not have Deputy Davern's support with the previous Minister.
