Vol. 265 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Single-Parent Families.

31.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if it is proposed to provide additional financial assistance for single-parent families.

The elimination of poverty and the ending of social injustice are major priority areas in the social policy programme which the Government intend to pursue. As part of this policy the Government are committed to make substantial improvements in existing social welfare payments which will of course benefit single parent families in common with other categories of recipients. In addition a review of the social assistance services is being carried out. An examination of the question as to what additional assistance should be provided for single-parent families is being undertaken as part of this review. I regard this aspect of the review as being of serious urgency.
