Vol. 265 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Army Barracks.

47.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will make a statement regarding the proposed new Army barracks; which existing barracks in Dublin is to be closed; and if he will ensure that this barracks will be handed over to Dublin Corporation to be re-developed for municipal purposes.

The question of providing a new military barracks is under consideration. The work involved in a project of this magnitude is necessarily slow and early developments in the matter are not anticipated. The location of the new barracks has not been decided.

When the new accommodation is provided, it will be possible to vacate and dispose of one of the existing barracks and in this connection account will be taken of housing and other needs. No decision has been taken as to which of the existing barracks will be vacated.

Can the Minister give an assurance that when this barracks becomes vacant it will not be put up to the speculators and sold to the highest bidder?

The Minister will see to it that the best interests of his Department and the State are looked after.
