Vol. 265 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nationalisation of Banks.

96.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed that the banks and other credit institutions be put into public ownership; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

97.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has any proposals to nationalise the banks.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 96 and 97 together.

As the answer to the Deputies' questions is "no", comment upon a non-existent proposal would be pointless.

Is this a change of policy by the Government as steps were announced prior to the election by people who are now Ministers to nationalise the banks and to control credit generally?

I fear the Deputy is confusing the false accusations that he and his allies made against members of the present Government and the truth. The truth is there was no statement from any member of the present Government or from members of the parties supporting the Government that they would nationalise the banks. This Government are satisfied that the existing arrangements for the supervision of banks and other credit institutions are adequate, and that the banks are operating in a satisfactory manner in the public interest.

I suggest that the Minister's reply is not correct.

It is not in order to be suggestive in the course of Question Time.
