Vol. 265 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employer-Labour Conference Report.

99.

asked the Minister for Finance the intentions of the Government concerning the recent report issued by the Employer-Labour Conference concerning the allowances paid to members of the Government, Parliamentary Secretaries, Deputies, Senators and other persons in receipt of higher renumeration.

100.

asked the Minister for Finance if he proposes to accept the Employer-Labour Conference recommendations with regard to allowances to Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 99 and 100 together.

I am not at present in a position to announce the Government's intentions in relation to the report of the Employer-Labour Conference Special Committee but I hope to be able to do so at an early date.

How early is early?

When we have attended to the more urgent needs of others we will then attend to the matters which were referred to the Employer-Labour Conference.

I hope the Minister will say that to the backbench members of his party who pressed me very hard.

Backbench members of the parties supporting this Government share the Government's anxiety to help those in greatest need first.

Deputy Desmond is a backbencher of the Minister's party whether he knows it or not.

(Interruptions.)

Unfortunately the new Deputy does not know the facts.
