Vol. 265 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Economic Council.

101.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the statement made on 27th January, 1973, in Cork by the Director General of the Confederation of Irish Industries that the formation of a national economic council was one of the essential ingredients of industrial policy to co-ordinate anti-inflationary measures; and when he proposes to meet the employer, trade union and farming organisations to consult with them about the terms of reference of the new national economic council.

My attention has been drawn to the statement of the Director General of the CII referred to by the Deputy. The Deputy is no doubt aware that certain difficulties as to representation have in the past held up agreement on the possible constitution of a National Economic Council. The ICTU raised the question of the establishment of the council in the course of their recent meeting with the Taoiseach and Ministers on their budget submission. The Taoiseach told them that the Government would consider their proposals in the near future and thereafter would consult with all concerned organisations about the early establishment of a National Economic Council.
