Vol. 265 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Price Pooling System.

148.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he supports the proposals for the establishment of a central pooling system for the money realised for all milk sent to creameries in Ireland so that every farmer will benefit to the same extent from the proposed EEC increases; and, if so, the action he proposes to take.

The introduction of a creamery milk price pooling system is a matter for the dairying industry itself. It would be contrary to EEC regulations for the Government to impose such a system.

Is it not true that the Irish Farmers' Association have asked for the Government to give a directive on this matter?

It is not true.

It has been reported in the papers that this is what they have asked the Government to do.

They have asked the Government to encourage the producers in this direction and I would be glad to see them doing something in this direction.

The Government intend to take no action.

The Government is prohibited by EEC regulations from taking action.

The Government cannot take any action.
