Vol. 265 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Surplus Butter.

151.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if any view was expressed on behalf of the Government regarding the sale of surplus EEC butter to Russia; and, if not, why.

Ireland did not express any reservation on the EEC Dairy Produce Management Committee's decision to recommend this sale by the European Commission, as the sale of surplus stock to a third-country market is beneficial to the normal market for Irish butter in the Community.

If I might refer the Minister to the last part of my question —if not, why not?

I have answered that.

The Minister was saying indirectly that the Irish Government approve of the sale of butter.

Yes. I say it is a very good thing for us that the surplus butter has been sold to a third country.

Was that butter edible? This is a question asked by the importing country.

A big proportion had reached the stage where it was not.
