The Council of Europe has selected the prelude to the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as the European Anthem. The Council asked the International Committee for the European Schools Day to sponsor a competition amongst school pupils for a text for this anthem.
The Irish National Committee for European Schools Day organised such a competition as part of its general activities. All post-primary schools were invited to participate. The entries were examined by members of the National Committee and the entry which is adjudged to be the best will be forwarded to the International Committee.
