Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swimming Grants.

36.

Mr. Kitt

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider giving grants to enable pupils of primary and post primary schools to avail of swimming lessons in view of the importance of swimming as a physical education subject and in view of the number of swimming pools not being fully availed of throughout the country.

Swimming is a part of the physical education curriculum in primary and post-primary schools.

I fully appreciate the desirability of having the opportunity to obtain instruction in swimming made available to as many young people as possible.

I am not, however, at the present time in a position to make grants of the kind mentioned in the Deputy's question. I would add, however, that I shall take a very close look at the problem. I would welcome views from Members of the House as to how this could be done without entering into a large and open-ended financial commitment.
