Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prison Doctor.

41.

asked the Minister for Justice if a full time doctor has been appointed to Mountjoy Prison; and, if so, when.

The appointment of a full time medical officer to Mountjoy Prison is not contemplated. The emphasis is rather on a more diversified medical service.

Formerly a full-time medical officer was responsible both for Mountjoy Prison and St. Patrick's Institution. Since the beginning of 1972 there has been a part-time medical officer for each. Offenders requiring specialist treatment are referred to the appropriate clinics and hospitals outside.

Consultant psychiatrists also conduct weekly sessions in Mountjoy and in St. Patrick's for mentally disturbed offenders by arrangement with the Eastern Health Board. Serious cases are transferred, on certification, to mental hospitals.

It seems to me that these arrangements are reasonably adequate. The whole matter is under regular review and the medical services are being continually extended.

Has the Minister included the reply to Question No. 42 in that?
