Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mandatory Prison Sentences.

47.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider providing for mandatory prison sentences on persons convicted of offences in which firearms were used.

The law already provides for imprisonment without the option of a fine in the case of a conviction on indictment for certain offences involving the possession of firearms, namely, armed robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.

The law relating to firearms was amended and strengthened as recently as 1971 and I have no proposals for its further amendment at this stage.
