Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Cards.

62.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the eligibility of persons in receipt of old age and widows' non-contributory pensions, deserted wives allowances and blind pensions for medical cards without any other assessment of means, he will arrange in conjunction with the Department of Social Welfare to have these cards issued automatically to such persons, with provision for periodic review.

I appreciate the reasoning underlying the Deputy's suggestion. The particular arrangement which he suggests would not, however, be appropriate primarily because a person in any of the categories mentioned could already be the holder of a medical card. Arrangements are, however, being made by the Department of Social Welfare to inform new recipients of such pensions or allowances of their eligibility for medical cards without any further assessment of means.
