Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Doctor Group Practices.

69.

asked the Minister for Health if he is prepared to give financial help to doctors who form group practices.

For doctors participating in the choice of doctor scheme, there are incentives by way of higher capital grants by health boards for premises in the cases of group practices and in some cases the boards provide facilities for practice in their own clinics or health centres. If any modification of these arrangements seems desirable, this can be taken into account in a general review of the conditions for this scheme which is due later this year and which, it is hoped, will take into account recommendations on this by the Consultative Council on General Practice.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that in a place such as Ballyfermot, which I represent, if group practice could be encouraged there would be a greater facility for medical assistance to the population? I understand there are times when it is difficult to get a doctor in that area. I am sorry Deputy Byrne has left the House because I imagine he would say the same applies in Ballymun. Would the Government not consider making it far more attractive for doctors to form group practices than applies at the moment?

I can only say the Consultative Council on General Practice which will be reporting later this year will have recommendations to make on those lines. I will communicate with the Deputy about the matter.
