Vol. 265 No. 14

Written Answers. - Occupational Injury Benefit.

200.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange that a person who is in receipt of occupational injury benefit is assessed by a medical referee before the period covered by the last assessment has expired.

The Deputy is assumed to be referring to provisional awards of disablement benefit under the occupational injuries scheme. It is clearly desirable, having regard to the possibility of change in a claimant's condition which is implicit in a provisional award, that his medical assessment should be carried out near to the date on which the current award expires. With this in mind and subject to the necessity for arranging medical sessions throughout the country with due regard to the most efficient use of available medical staff, every effort is made to have recipients of disablement benefit examined by medical referees before the expiration of current awards of benefit.
