Vol. 265 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - VAT Increases Revenue.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of additional revenue (a) in the present financial year and (b) in a full year estimated to result from the increase in the 5.26 per cent VAT rate to 6.75 per cent.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of additional revenue (a) in the present financial year and (b) in a full year estimated to result from the increase in the VAT rate from 16.37 per cent to 19.5 per cent.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of additional revenue (a) in the present financial year and (b) in a full year estimated to result from the increase in the VAT rate from 30.26 per cent to 36.75 per cent.

The information sought in Questions Nos. 26, 27 and 28 is set out in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

The changes in the VAT rates cannot be considered apart from the zero rating of food and oral medicines at an estimated cost of £8.35 million in the current year and £16.70 million in a full year.

Subject to this consideration, the information is as follows:

Additional Revenue

1972-73

Full year

5.26% to 6.75% (non-food items)

(a) £6.05m.

(b) £12.10m.

16.37% to 19.5%

(a) £3.65m.

(b) £7.30m.

30.26% to 36.75%

(a) £1.45m.

(b) £2.90m.

Would it be true to say that there are certain aspects of the information sought in these questions which the Minister is willing to give to the House and certain aspects which he is reluctant to give to the House?

If not would the Minister please give the information which I sought in the form of a tabular statement so that it will be available to all Members of the House.

The Deputy knows that answers to questions——

We seem to be getting back to a previous question in this matter.

If the Deputy were to insist upon his request to produce them in the House, there would be a delay in furnishing the reply to the question.

I am quite willing to facilitate the Minister by not insisting on that if the Minister would undertake to circulate it. There are methods open to him by which this can be done.

All the information will be made available to Deputies and the general public in reply to the budget debate.

I am calling Question No. 29.

The Minister has the information which he wishes to have but what about the information the Minister does not wish to have?

If the Deputy would recall my budget statement he would realise that I made it perfectly clear that I was in favour——

I am passing to the next question.

My question was based on my experience in the House.
