Vol. 266 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Housing.

55.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details in respect of Dublin Corporation of the financial allocation for (a) housing construction and (b) loans and grants for the years ending 31st March, 1973, and 31st March, 1974.

It is not the practice to make a formal allocation of capital to Dublin Corporation for local authority housing. Because of the special urgency attached to the Corporation's programme, the position is reviewed early in each financial year by officers of the corporation and of my Department and whatever capital is required is advanced during the year. Issues from the Local Loans Fund to Dublin Corporation for local authority housing (including land acquisition) in 1972-73 amounted to £6.5 million. The corporation's estimate of capital requirements for this purpose in 1973-74 is £12.35 million.

Expenditure by the corporation on the making of house purchase loans and supplementary grants in 1972-73 was £1.5 million. A capital allocation of £2.5 million for these services has been notified to the corporation for 1973-74.

Can we have an assurance that this system which was m operation some years ago will not lead to a collapse in the housing programme as happened in 1956-57? The Bank of Ireland would not accept the guarantee of the then Taoiseach.

I am calling Question No. 56.
