Vol. 266 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Advertisements.

92.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ban advertisements which specify either men or women for job vacancies in the public service.

Mr. Kenny

The position in relation to Civil Service grades at present reserved for men or women is being reviewed in the light of the recommendations of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary indicate to me when this discrimination, at least in advertisements, will be dispensed with?

Mr. Kenny

The discrimination was not really discrimination at all. It is only the form of the advertisements that have been published in the papers over the years. The Commission on the Status of Women, in their publication, gave all relevant details regarding this, but now with what is called women's liberation I think it will cease in a very short time.

"A short time" is one of the expressions we are used to hear. During the Presidential Election campaign, right up to polling day, we got a promise a day. I am just wondering how long we shall have to wait for these promises to be fulfilled, especially in relation to this question, which is one that was played on to a very great extent.

Mr. Kenny

I do not think it was ever played on.
