Vol. 266 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Pier.

103.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take immediate action to implement the improvement scheme sanctioned in 1968-69 for Shadanavoohogue Pier, Fanad, County Donegal.

Mr. Kenny

I should like to see this scheme commenced as soon as possible but it will first be necessary for the Donegal County Council to complete the acquisition of a piece of ground which is essential for the scheme.

It is because of omission on the part of the county council over a long period that I asked the Parliamentary Secretary whether he would ensure by whatever means are available to him that the necessary acquisitions are completed and that this matter will not go on any longer? The money was provided in 1969 but it is still today as it was then.

Mr. Kenny

The Deputy asked the same question on the 29th of July, 1971 and the 31st of May, 1972. Why did the Donegal County Council not do their part in acquiring this piece of land?

That is what I am asking the Parliamentary Secretary's office to ensure. It is their responsibility to complete this job. The money has been provided, the scheme has been passed and prepared and the need is there. The Donegal County Council should not be allowed to frustrate the efforts of the Department to do this necessary work.

Mr. Kenny

Can we compel them?

Of course, you can. Put the screws on them. You know the way. You can turn them off and on as you like.

We cannot engage in an argument at Question Time.
