asked the Minister for Labour the applications received to date by his and other Departments for assistance from the European Social Fund; the amounts, if any, sought; and the purpose of each application.

The EEC Commission deals with one central agency in each member state in regard to the submission of applications for assistance from the European Social Fund. The Department of Labour is the central agency for this country and the Department deals with applications on this basis.

To date, nine applications have been received by my Department and submitted to the EEC Commission for a total of approximately £3½ million in respect of programmes for the training, retraining and resettlement of workers. This figure includes two applications relating to vocational rehabilitation of handicapped persons. Further applications are being formulated. Details of the 9 applications sent to the EEC Commission are as follows:

According as further training programmes are settled, applications for additional aid from the fund can be formulated by the authorities concerned. Information about the fund has been communicated to other Departments and agencies and discussions are taking place on proposals for further applications.
