Vol. 267 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Criminal Court Convictions.

183.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons convicted to date by the Special Criminal Court.

Two hundred and twenty-one persons were convicted by the Special Criminal Court in the period from its establishment on 30th May, 1972, up to 30th June, 1973.

184.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons convicted to date under the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act, 1972.

Nobody has been convicted of an offence created by the 1972 Act. However it is a reasonable assumption that some of the evidential provisions of the Act were a factor in the conviction of some persons who were charged with the offence of membership of an unlawful organisation contrary to the 1939 Act.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
