Vol. 268 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Naval Ranks.

28.

asked the Minister for Defence the highest rank in the Irish Navy; and if the Government will consider granting a rank higher than heretofore to the head of the Irish Navy.

The highest naval rank provided for in the establishment for the Naval Service is that of captain. It is not proposed to alter that provision.

In view of the fact that the Navy in recent times has expanded quite a lot, would the Minister not reconsider this matter?

The position is that the head of the Air Corps holds the rank of Colonel which is equivalent to the naval rank of captain. The establishment in the Naval Service, while we would like to see a higher rank, does not for service personnel qualify for a higher rank than captain.
