Vol. 268 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aerosol Inhalers.

9.

asked the Minister for Health if he has examined reports regarding deaths arising from the effects of aerosol inhalers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have read reports on the matter referred to in the question.

Some years ago the National Drugs Advisory Board examined especially the position regarding the use of bronchodilators in aerosols in this country. It considered that in proper dosage and mode of inhalation the bronchodilators are of great value in the treatment of asthma, but that their misuse could have serious reactions.

Warning letters were issued by the board to all doctors and to the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, for the attention of dispensing chemists, drawing to their notice the importance of adequate instruction of the patient in the proper use of the medication.

The board also held discussions with the pharmaceutical firms concerned and for some years the containers bear acceptable forms of cautionary labelling and instruction.

The board consider that the measures taken have achieved a more cautious use of these agents.

The board indicate that a survey of asthma deaths possibly attributable to excessive use of these preparations indicated that 18 occurred in 1968, five in 1969, two in 1970 and one in 1971.

The question of providing, in poisons regulations which it is proposed to make shortly, that aerosols containing drugs used as bronchodilators can only be made available to the public on prescription is under consideration by Comhairle na Nimheanna.
