Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Border Patrols.

7.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that young Gardaí in certain border areas are sent out on pedal-cycles late at night; and if he is satisfied that the safety of the personnel sent on these patrols is adequately ensured.

The assignment of duties to members of the Garda Síochána is a matter for the Garda authorities who, naturally, have regard at all times to the personal safety of members.

My concern is not in relation to what the Minister would see as the duty of the guards but to the fact that this refers to a Border area. These are young recruits being sent out on bicycles late at night without any protection whatsoever. In most areas the sensible thing would be to have two-man patrols. Is the Minister not aware that this is happening, that young recruits are being sent out from stations like Hackballs-cross on bicycle patrols late at night?

I am not aware that that is happening. I understand that patrols that have to be carried out after dark are carried out on foot in some cases and, in other cases, in patrol cars. I also understand that pocket radios have been obtained and are being distributed for use by members on such patrols in these areas. There would be no question of the guards risking any young recruits in a dangerous situation.

Will the Minister inquire if that is the case?

I am informed it is not the case.

My information is that it is the case. Very senior members of the Garda Síochána, not senior in rank but in years, are very worried about young recruits going out in such conditions.

If the Deputy gives me date and names, I shall investigate the matter.

And there will be recriminations——

There will be no recriminations.
