Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Management Training.

154.

asked the Minister for Labour if, in the light of the findings of the survey team appointed by the Committee on Industrial Progress to examine the furniture industry, he will contribute towards the cost of providing management training for smaller firms.

The Government are already contributing to the cost of management training, including training in small firms, by substantial grants to the Irish Management Institute and through the technical Assistance grants scheme under which 50 per cent of the fees for approved management and supervision courses are paid. Furthermore, under the levy/ grant scheme for the construction industry, which is financed by levies on the industry, furniture firms can receive a further 25 per cent of the cost of approved management and supervisory courses.

While I accept the need for greatly improved management performance in the industry I do not see that there is scope for improving the inducements I have outlined, at present.
