Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Car Seat Belts.

93.

asked the Minister for Local Government his attitude towards the proposed EEC directive on motor car seat belts and seat belt anchorages.

The commission has not yet developed formal proposals in this matter for consideration by member States.

Are there any regulations here regarding seat belts?

There are no regulations but in view of the fact that a committee will be formulating proposals under EEC directive it might be better if we waited until we receive these proposals. The fitting of seat belts in new cars is the only regulation I know of.

The Minister's predecessor intimated that he intended progressively to make regulations——

He announced an awful lot of things which he forgot about afterwards. I did not come across any such regulations in the Department.

It might be as well to look at it again.
