asked the Minister for Finance the estimated cost of raising personal income tax allowances by an amount sufficient to retain their real value as at May, 1972, after the improvements in the 1972 budget.

Mr. Kenny

The total cost of raising the single, widowed, married and child allowances for income tax purposes to the level referred to in the question is estimated at about £17.8 million in a full year.

asked the Minister for Finance the cost of increasing (a) the income tax personal allowance from £299 to £498 and (b) the income tax married allowance from £494 to £988.

Following are full-year estimates of the costs requested: (a) £35 million, (b) £40 million.
