Vol. 269 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kildare School.

6.

asked the Minister for Education when he expects to be in a position to sanction the extension for the North Kildare Vocational School at Maynooth, County Kildare.

Mr. R. Burke

My Department is at present considering the future secondary school facilities to be provided for the developing areas in North Kildare. The proposal received from the County Kildare Vocational Education committee to extend the accommodation in Maynooth Vocational School is being considered in this context.

Would the Minister explain to me how future secondary education should impinge on the wishes of the vocational education committee to increase the present size of the school?

Mr. R. Burke

The Deputy will realise I am using the word "secondary" as announced on the Education Estimate, where previously "post-primary" was used. The Deputy will be aware that the North Kildare areas of Maynooth, Leixlip and Celbridge are developing areas and that the secondary provision to be made in these districts is under consideration. There are Maynooth vocational school, mixed, Saint Wolstan's, Celbridge, for girls only; Kilcock with two schools, and Lucan. All these will have some effect on the overall decision. I am having all these matters investigated, and this investigation has not yet been completed.
