Vol. 269 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Telephone Service.

24.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the installation of a telephone for a co-operative society (details supplied) in County Kerry which needs this facility urgently.

Yes. Arrangements are being made accordingly.

The service is usually provided within two to three months of completion of the agreement.

25.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when the exchange for the Killorglin area, County Kerry, will become automatic, in view of the fact that the necessary equipment was installed three years ago; and the reason for the delay.

It is planned to convert Killorglin exchange to automatic working in about three years. Earlier conversion is not possible because of the necessity to give precedence to the conversion of many larger exchanges. Automatic exchange equipment has not been installed at Killorglin.

A building was erected about three years ago and equipment installed—I do not know whether it is automatic—but the industrialists in Killorglin are finding that the telephone service is erratic and not workable. For that reason I should like to ask the Minister to do everything possible to rectify this.

It is probably interference from the mussel beds.

No automatic exchange equipment has been installed in Killorglin. The Deputy was told this on a number of occasions. Trunk equipment was provided in 1969 associated with Tralee, Killorglin and Killorglin-Cahirciveen cables. There are only 144 subscribers and the report is that the service is good. No complaints were made by industrialists that anything was wrong.

The Minister should be around there at the time Puck Fair is held and he would find out what the subscribers think.

Question No. 26 postponed.
