Vol. 269 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. - Financial Losses in Border Areas.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the serious financial losses suffered by the business community in the border areas of County Louth and in other border areas due to the troubles in Northern Ireland, he will provide financial aid to alleviate the hardship caused.

Because of the many factors which govern loss or profit in trading, it would not be feasible to identify or quantify the losses, if any, suffered by individual traders in border areas, or for that matter in other parts of the country as a result of the troubles in Northern Ireland. In any event the consequences to taxpayers in general could be enormous if the principle was established that the Exchequer could be obliged to make good any trading losses.
