Vol. 270 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discharge of Mercury Compounds.

92.

asked the Minister for Local Government the action the Government propose to take to comply with the OECD recommendation to reduce the discharge of mercury compounds into the environment.

So far as my Department are concerned I have no reason to think that mercury discharges to water or air constitute a significant environmental hazard in this country at present. Such discharges are covered by the general statutory measures relating to water and air pollution control. The OECD recommendations, and other considerations including those arising from the EEC environmental programme, will be taken into account as may be appropriate in the further development of national measures.
