Vol. 270 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

97.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction a tender for Shruffaun/Bungowla water scheme, Inishmore, Aran Islands, County Galway.

Tenders for this scheme have not been submitted to my Department to date.

I was informed by the local authority that they had submitted them. Obviously there is a breakdown in communications between the Department and the local authority. I know the Minister cannot be expected to explain it.

It was understood from Galway County Council on 1st February, 1974, that the tenders would be received from the consultants this week and will be forwarded after perusal by the county engineer.

They have not sent them on yet.

98.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction contract documents for the Galway city water supply extension to the Castlegar/Cloonacauneen and Brier Hill/Ballybrit areas.

Contract documents for this scheme have not been submitted to my Department to date.

99.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of all new local authority water and sewerage schemes commenced since 1st April, 1973.

This information is not available in the form requested by the Deputy but I am arranging to send him particulars of the tenders I have sanctioned and direct labour schemes approved for the period mentioned.

100.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position concerning Burnfoot water supply scheme, County Donegal.

Contract documents for the filtration plant for this scheme were approved by me on the 28th September last.

I approved the contract documents for the civil works on the 31st January, 1974.

Has the Minister yet sanctioned the tenders for the filtration plant for this scheme?

Contract documents for the filtration plant for this scheme were approved on 28th September last.

The tenders, I said.

The contract documents for the civil works. That is all I have got before me. What went to the Department was sanctioned on those two dates.

101.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the present position concerning Manorcunningham/ Corkey water supply scheme, County Donegal.

I approved contract documents for this scheme on the 7th December last. There are no further proposals before me in the matter.

102.

asked the Minister for Local Government why there is a shortfall in the supply of processed water in Dublin Corporation housing areas.

While this is primarily a matter for Dublin Corporation, I understand that localised shortages arise from time to time in certain fringe areas of the city. This is only to be expected in view of the failure in the past to plan and finance a sanitary services programme sufficient to cater for increasing needs. However, the considerable expansion in the programme now achieved, which includes a number of very substantial schemes in planning and construction by the Dublin local authorities, should progressively eliminate such regrettable shortages.

Would the Minister agree that the projections for water required in the city were in accordance with the projections for the housing development which was expected to take place and that the latter, in fact, exceeded the former? Is not that the case rather than saying there was bad planning in the first place?

That is not the information I have.
