Vol. 270 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection of Architectural Heritage.

132.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Government will review its legislative powers and administrative practice with a view to increasing the protection afforded to the architectural heritage of the State.

The National Committee for European Architectural Heritage Year, 1975, are hoping to produce a study of the legal, financial and administrative aspects of the conservation of our architectural heritage. The programme of the Council of Europe for the year includes pilot projects, symposia, conferences and reports which should result in a great deal of information on the approaches adopted in participating countries, and how these might be improved. It might be appropriate at that stage to review our own approach. In the meantime I hope that the Bill to amend the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, will go some way towards increasing the protection which can be given by local authorities.
