Vol. 270 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Smuggling.

138.

asked the Minister for Finance if his investigation proposed on 22nd May, 1973, has established whether Argentinian meat has been smuggled into this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The investigation referred to confirmed that an irregular importation had taken place but the origin of the meat involved was not established. The meat in question, following veterinary examination, was seized and destroyed by burning.

If loopholes were discovered at that time can I assume that they have been sealed and that this is unlikely to happen again?

In so far as it is possible to ensure that the like does not occur again that has been done.

Did the meat get out into the country?

I understand that it did not. It was found in one location and I do not think there is any reason to fear that it had been distributed.
