Vol. 270 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Embassies Lighting Facilities.

10.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the lighting for typists in the Irish embassies in London and Washington is in accord with section 14 of the Factories Act, 1955.

If the Deputy is referring to section 12 of the Office Premises Act, 1958, the answer is yes. The Factories Act, 1955, does not cover office premises.

The present standard of lighting for typists in the London embassy was set in 1970 and is above that required by the Act. The standard of lighting in the typing rooms in the embassy at Washington was approved by inspection in 1970 and meets the minimum required by the Act. However, steps are being taken to improve the standard in one room in conjunction with the repair and redecoration of that embassy.

Is the Minister aware that some of the staff were complaining about lighting in the typing rooms?

I am aware there are problems. It is not sufficient to meet the minimal standards laid down. It is important to have adequate lighting and we are concerned about that.
