Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supply of Scottish Rams.

209.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries why only two Scottish rams were supplied to farmers in Kerry last year while farmers in Donegal and Waterford received considerable numbers.

210.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that Scottish rams purchased in recent years are too soft and not suited to the rigorous mountain conditions of Kerry; and if his Department will make arrangements to enable some Kerry sheep owners to visit the Scottish sales.

211.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that all Scottish rams imported into this country are purchased in Perth and that this practice lends itself to in-breeding; and if his officials will purchase rams from other areas.

With the approval of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 209 to 211, inclusive, together.

Only three Blackface rams were imported by my Department from Scotland in the past four years. One of these rams was supplied to a Kerry farmer. In selecting these rams the local conditions for their location are taken into account. Purchases in Scotland have been made mainly at Perth because it is the largest sale and there is a wide range of selection. No arrangements are made by my Department for attendance of any Irish farmers at these sales.
