Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Grants.

65.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the high unexpended balance on main road grants in County Cork in the past year, he will re-allocate this money in addition to the full grants for the coming financial year.

66.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ensure that road grants allocated to Kerry County Council for the year 1973-74 will not be reduced if the schemes for which the grants were allocated are not completed before 31st March, 1974.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 65 and 66 together.

As stated in my reply to an earlier question on 18th October, 1973, Road Fund grants are not paid until the works are actually carried out and unused grants may be re-allocated in a subsequent year according as the progress of the work programme may require.

The allocations to each road authority for the coming year will be related to the total work programme for the year including any works which were delayed in the current year because of special staffing or other difficulties.

67.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is prepared to allocate special road grants to local authorities to enable them to repair extensive damage to county roads caused by recent storms and floodings.

Road Fund grants are not specifically allocated for repair or maintenance works on county roads.

68.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make funds available to Mayo County Council so that repairs to roads, etc. that would normally be carried out with grants under the local improvement scheme may be undertaken.

Mayo County Council were notified on 15th February, 1974, that further expenditure of £7,500 would be allowed over and above the original allocation to that county of £120,000 for local improvement scheme works.
