Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxation on Office Block Developers.

125.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount collected from office block developers by way of taxation in the Dublin area in the last financial year.

The amount of stamp duty collected in the year ended 31st March, 1973, in respect of office block developments in the Dublin area was £567,743.

Income tax, sur-tax and corporation profits tax are also payable in respect of income and profits from office block letting and office block development but statistics in relation to those taxes are not kept in such a manner as would enable particulars of the yield from the tax charge on such activities to be given.

Does the Minister consider that this tax has had any influence in slowing down the number of buildings being erected?

We do not know but, as the Deputy knows, we have provided a higher rate of stamp duty on office blocks in Dublin than applies in the rest of the country.

The relief the Minister gave these owners through the removal of the health charges off the rates offsets any taxation collected otherwise?

No, it does not. The Deputy appreciates that we have collected income tax and corporation profits tax to a larger extent as a consequence because these people are not able to set off the same rates burden against their profits.
