Vol. 270 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry River Fishing Fees.

144.

asked the Minister for Finance why the Office of Public Works increased the fishing fees on the River Laune at Beaufort, County Kerry to £35 in view of the fact that the clubs that held the lease previously charged only £12 and that the new charges have prevented fishing by local workers who formerly availed of the club facilities and fished the river.

Mr. Kenny

In previous years the State fishery on the River Laune was let to the Muckross Fishery Trust who operated it on a restricted basis. When the lease expired in 1973 it was decided that the Commissioners of Public Works would administer the fishery themselves and would open it to the public on a fee/permit basis. I am satisfied that the fees being charged for the season and daily permits are reasonable and that the new arrangements have been generally welcomed.
