Vol. 271 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Space Exploration.

104.

asked the Minister for Finance if the Government are satisfied with the scale and scope of this country's contribution to Europe's co-operative efforts to explore and exploit space for peaceful purposes.

Ireland has had observer status in the European Space Research Organisation for a number of years. This body has been very successful in promoting co-ordination of the efforts of West European countries to draw benefit from space research. The question of our joining as full members of this organisation, or of the European Space Agency (ESA) which will be its successor body from 1st March next, is currently under consideration. Because of the considerable expenditure which would be involved, a close analysis is being made of possible benefits as against estimated costs. Apart from the question of joining the European Space Research Organisation, consideration is also being given to Ireland's becoming a member of the European Space Conference.

The remaining questions will appear on next Tuesday's Order Paper.
