Vol. 271 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Spirits.

61.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the steps he has taken to have excessive increases in the prices of spirits withdrawn.

In June, 1973, inspectors of my Department visited 20 lounge bars in Dublin in which according to reports received in my Department prices of spirits were alleged to have been increased by 4p per glass or 1p in excess of the increase provided for in the budget. In all cases the excess increase was voluntarily withdrawn.

Would the Minister have his inspectors continue this investigation because there are still several lounge bars that have put on that extra price and have not withdrawn it since?

I will gladly do that. I might take this opportunity of urging Deputies, where they know of cases of abuse, to bring them to my notice so that I can aid my inspectors because the task is enormous and we have to use them to maximum effect. But I shall be happy to receive such communications and I will safeguard their confidentiality.
