Vol. 271 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Text Books.

78.

asked the Minister for Education the titles of the text books in use for the subjects mathematics, history and geography for students in fifth and sixth classes at the All-Irish School, Marlborough Street, Dublin.

Mr. R. Burke

The following is the position in relation to the text books in use for these subjects in Scoil Cholmcille and Scoil Mhuire.

Mathematics

5th standard 6th standard

I dTreo na Matamaitice Mostly English texts but copies of Nua-Chéim being used.

History

5th and 6th standards

Stair na hÉireann—Cuid I agus Cuid II (údar: Seán Ó Finneadha).

Geography

5th and 6th standards

Mostly English texts but copies of Bunús Geograife (údar: Séamus Ó Sé) being used.

Will the Minister accept that the information he has now given is somewhat in conflict with that given by him last week?

Mr. R. Burke

No, there is no conflict. The answer I gave last week was that texts in Irish are available in all but one of the seven subjects on the curriculum. The seven subjects on the curriculum are Irish, English, mathematics, religious instruction, arts and crafts, physical education, social and environmental studies. Since history and geography are part of social and environmental studies and since I mentioned that this was the aspect of the new curriculum which did not have texts, the two answers given by me are consistent.

I understood from the Minister that with regard to mathematics texts in English were used?

Mr. R. Burke

No, I dTreo na Matamaitice is being used. The Deputy will be glad to note a new text will be issued in a fortnight which will replace the one now in use in the sixth standard.

I am sorry I cannot ask the Minister to repeat his answer. When I see the answer I may have another question for him.
