Vol. 271 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork School.

34.

asked the Minister for Finance when he will be in a position to seek tenders for the erection of a new boys' national school at Passage West, County Cork; and when it is hoped that the school will be opened.

Mr. Kenny

A grant towards the cost of erecting this school was sanctioned in January this year. Plans for the building are in hands and a quantity surveyor will be appointed in about two months' time. Tenders will be invited as soon as the bills of quantities are ready but it is yet too early to say when the school will be opened.

What does the Parliamentary Secretary mean by "as soon as the bills of quantities are ready"? Can he give us an approximate time?

Mr. Kenny

Sketch plans for a five-classroom school with a general purpose room were issued to the Department of Education in April, 1971, but owing to difficulties about the erection of a boundary fence insisted on by the vendor of the site a grant was not sanctioned towards the cost of the works until 21st January, 1974. Working drawings were commenced in March, 1974, and will be completed about the end of May. Bills of quantities will then be required and will take a period of from six to eight weeks to prepare. The case is being given special priority.
