asked the Taoiseach the total number of persons in receipt of unemployment assistance on 20th April, 1973, and on 19th April, 1974.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Statistics.
The total number of applicants for unemployment assistance on the live register was 30,101 on 20th April, 1973 and 30,750 on 19th April, 1974.
Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that since those dates the latest figures show that there is now an increase of over 600 in the number of people in receipt of unemployment assistance in comparison with the same period last year? Would he state what action the Government are taking to try to ensure that this trend does not continue—it is to be deplored—and what action the Government are taking to reduce these figures by the provision of employment?
In regard to the first part of the Deputy's supplementary I am not so aware and in regard to the rest of his supplementary it is not my responsibility in regard to answering the Deputy's statistical question.
The figure is an increase of 618 in case the Parliamentary Secretary is not aware of it.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the latest figures circulated to us show that there has been an overall increase of 601 people in receipt of unemployment assistance over last year?
